S.E.S Deer Management provides farmers, landowners and forestry owners a professional deer management service.
Safe - We are made up of 4 experienced deer managers, holding a minimum of DSC2 qualification and includes members with an Advance Deer Management qualification and being a DMQ Approved Witness. We have been managing deer in a public forest for conservation organisations with high public access for over 10 years. Safety is of paramount importance. We adopt the same rigorous safety protocols to any ground we use rifles to control deer.
Effective - we have decades of experience in managing wild deer populations. Whether you would like a few problem deer culled on a one-off basis or a deer management plan and more formal long term service, each can be catered for! We use modern thermal spotters and a mixture of high seats and stalking to effectively reduce deer numbers.
Sustainable - we work with landowners to manage deer to an acceptable level for the landowners.
Why manage wild deer?
Wild deer numbers in the UK are at the highest levels since records began with an estimated 2 million in the wild! It’s also estimated that the number of deer have doubling since 1999.
The last study by DEFRA back in 2002 estimated the costs to English agriculture to be £4.3m annually, this is likely to be much higher now.
It is estimated that 74,000 deer related road traffic accidents happen each year across Britain with a small number of people killed each year as a result.
The governments tree planting target is 30,000 hectares / year, which has brought deer management into the spotlight. The government have introduced the WS1 Deer control and management grant which can provide £90 / hectare for qualifying woodlands. Please contact us to discuss how we can help in with this.
As there are no natural predators for deer since wolfs were removed from the wild in the 17th century, culling of deer with rifles has proven to be the most effective and humane method of control. Even charities such as the RSPB which are largely against shooting, recognise the necessity of having deer numbers controlled on their land such as Minsmere in Suffolk. For deer management to be effective on a landscape, it is important to have the landowners support & cooperation. A well managed deer population can provide sustainable high quality venison to the local community, naturally low in saturated fat, free from antibiotics and it tastes delicious!
Our Services
We provide landowners and land managers with deer management, deer impact assessments, deer management plans and deer numbers census by thermal spotting surveys carried out at night. We have been providing deer management to a UK wide organisation with have high public access forests for over a decade and can provide a number of references on request from the current farmers / forest managers we manage deer for.
Whether you have muntjac eating the plants in your garden and you require a few removed in a quick, informal way. Up to large landowners that require deer management plans help in obtaining the government deer management grants by recording the deer management activates, for us to provide a cull plan and achieve that cull, each can be catered for.
What we do..
> Once you have contacted us for an initial conversation, we will come to you in person so you can meet us and have a no pressure discussion about your deer issues and see if we can help.
> If you happy to proceed, we will produce a map of the ground with any 'no shooting' areas or special consideration, footpaths, boundary's etc. Also agree how you would like to be contacted, some farmers like a text message each time prior to us going out others are happy to go without contacting each time, that can be tailored to suit you.
> Once this is agreed, will carry out the deer management as agreed on a regular basis as needed to achieve the cull, with 2/3 of the cull being female deer, Doe's or hinds and 1/3 being male bucks or stags being the standard practice for herding deer.
> We will extract deer without causing damage to crops or tracks, being sensible where we drive and park
> We will check with you before putting up high seats.
> Depending on the land and deer species / numbers we can provide you venison or the some of the proceeds from the venison sales.
> Access to your land is conditional to you being happy with our service and maybe withdrawn at anytime.
